How to Calculate Premixed Concrete Bags
Prebagged concrete mixes (such as QUIKRETE® or Sakrete®) are formulated with premixed Portland cement, sand, and coarse gravel. Because dry mix expands when mixed with water and compacted into forms, you cannot measure bag requirements purely by dry weight. Instead, calculations rely on volumetric yield.
Standard Manufacturer Bag Yields
| Bag Size (Dry Weight) | Yield (Cubic Feet) | Bags Per Cubic Yard (27 ft³) |
|---|---|---|
| 80 lb (36.3 kg) | 0.60 ft³ (0.0222 yd³) | 45 bags |
| 60 lb (27.2 kg) | 0.45 ft³ (0.0167 yd³) | 60 bags |
| 40 lb (18.1 kg) | 0.30 ft³ (0.0111 yd³) | 90 bags |
Mathematical Formula & Step-by-Step Method
To find how many bags of concrete you need for a slab:
- Calculate net volume in cubic feet:
Volume = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Thickness (in) ÷ 12) - Add waste factor (typically 5% to 10% for spillage and form deflection):
Order Volume = Volume × 1.10 - Divide order volume by the specific bag yield and round up to the nearest whole bag:
Bags Required = CEIL(Order Volume ÷ Bag Yield)
Real Worked Example
Scenario: Pouring a 10 ft × 10 ft patio slab, 4 inches thick, with 10% waste allowance.
- Thickness in feet: 4 in ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft
- Net volume: 10 ft × 10 ft × 0.333 ft = 33.33 cu. ft.
- Order volume (+10% waste): 33.33 × 1.10 = 36.67 cu. ft.
- 80 lb bags needed: 36.67 ÷ 0.60 = 61.11 → 62 full bags
- 60 lb bags needed: 36.67 ÷ 0.45 = 81.48 → 82 full bags
When to Use Bags vs. Ready-Mix Truck Delivery
For small to medium projects requiring under 1 cubic yard (approx. 45 bags of 80 lb mix), prebagged concrete is convenient and economical. For larger projects exceeding 1.5 to 2 cubic yards (over 90 bags of 80 lb mix), ordering short-load or ready-mix truck delivery is strongly recommended due to the heavy physical labor and time limits of manual mixing.
